FROM THE ROMANS TO CONTEMPORARY TIMES (Part 1)

Much like what happened in all of the basin of the Sousa, the Municipality of Lousada was also subject to an intense romanization.

The most visible face of the presence of civilizations from Latio since the 1st century b.C. is verified in the parishes of Meinedo, Cristelos, Caíde de Rei, Aveleda, Sousela and Nespereira. Of the Roman period's detected traces, the " Roman House" of Cristelos stands out as a domus appeared after the Roman passage through the village of S. Domingos, and was subject to archaeological intervention in 1996.

Quinta dos Padrões, located in the left bank of the Sousa river (Meinedo), presents traces of a Roman village, probably Vicus, with subsequent occupation during the High Middle Age, becoming Bisphop headquarters in the 7th century under the name of Magnetum. The Roman habitat (probable Roman Villa and necropolis) of Quinta de Vila Verde (Caíde de Rei) and the small Roman wine tank of the deer (Caíde de Rei), possibly a vestige associated to a small agricultural exploration testifying the antiqueness of wine production in the region. Asides from the different archaeological places assigned to the Roman period, isolated findings are abundant in the municipality, namely stars and epigraphed ploughs, the majority of which dispersed through several museums (e.g. the Museum of the Martins Sarmento Society and the National Museum Soares dos Reis).
